Hi all,

I hope you have a good trip to Ischia.  I am Lucía, a biological anthropologist pursuing a master’s degree in history of science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

My research topic is the scientific management of hazardous waste in Mexico’s second half of the 20th century. International agreements and national laws require a vulnerability study to choose the final waste disposal site. In such a study, scientists must calculate the exposure to harmful effects on nearby communities and the environmental risk. Since the regulations aim to reduce harm to most of the population, landfills should be located away from urban areas, where they converge with the housing of marginalized and racialized people.

In relating my research to the course, I think mainly of two points: I would like to explore how scientists investigate the ecological relationships between populations and their environment in vulnerability studies and how racial thinking permeates public policies regarding waste management.

I’m very excited to meet you all, and look forward to all the discussions!

Best,
Lucía
